In 1982, the author, an American English teacher, was offered a position teaching English to women at King Saud U. in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. This memoir reflects on the experiences of her and her son as they spent a year in the country, mostly addressing issues of culture and education in the gender-segregated society. Tolstoy is brought in as a literary conceit in relation to how he might have viewed Saudi society. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
