"A Topographical Dictionary to the Works of Shakespeare and His Fellow Dramatists" is a comprehensive reference work designed to bridge the gap between literature and geography. This monumental volume provides a detailed alphabetical listing of every place-name-from bustling London streets and taverns to distant kingdoms and mythical landscapes-mentioned in the plays and poems of William Shakespeare and his contemporaries.

Each entry offers historical context, identifying the location and explaining its significance within the dramatic canon of the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras. By documenting the topographical knowledge of the period, Edward H. Sugden sheds light on the world inhabited by dramatists like Christopher Marlowe, Ben Jonson, and Thomas Dekker. Readers will find insightful connections between real-world settings and their fictional representations, making this an essential resource for scholars of early modern drama, historians of London, and enthusiasts of English literature.

This dictionary serves as both a scholarly tool and a fascinating guide to the physical and imaginative horizons of the 16th and 17th centuries, preserving the rich spatial tapestry that defines the English Renaissance stage.
