Paperback. "The True Stevenson; A Study in Clarification" is a compelling biographical analysis that seeks to unveil the human reality of the celebrated author Robert Louis Stevenson. Written by George Sidney Hellman, this work serves as a corrective to earlier, often idealized accounts of the writer's life and character. By examining private letters, unpublished manuscripts, and personal testimonies, Hellman provides a more nuanced and candid portrait of the man behind "Treasure Island" and "Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde." The study delves into Stevenson's complex relationships, his struggles with health, and the evolution of his literary philosophy. Hellman challenges the "Seraph in Chocolate" myth-a sanitized version of Stevenson promoted by his contemporaries-and instead presents a figure of depth, contradiction, and immense creative energy. This volume is an essential resource for scholars of Victorian literature and fans of Stevenson's work, offering a profound exploration of the interplay between a writer's life and his artistic output. Through its rigorous approach to clarification, the book remains a significant contribution to Stevenson scholarship, shedding light on the personal trials and triumphs of one of Scotland's most beloved literary icons. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
