• Packed with facts, figures and a wealth of practical and identification information
• Field notes for each type include details of visual characteristics and where to see particularly good examples
• Over 500 spectacular, full-colour photographs
An erupting volcano, a sparkling diamond, and a fossil have much in common. Each plays a part in the intriguing tale of Earth's 4,600-million-year history, a story that continues to unfold as continents collide and pull apart, and as new fossil finds are made.
'Rocks and Fossils' reveals how the study of rocks and minerals enables us to uncover many or the extraordinary events that have taken place in that vast timespan. It explains how, by looking at fossils within those rocks, we can discover what organisms were alive at various times. It establishes which fossil families have survived to the present day, and in what form.
In addition, it opens our eyes to the critical role Earth's resources play in our daily lives and the importance of conserving them for future generations.
This book takes you on a journey to the most remarkable geological and paleontological sites in the world, and explains the significance of the material they contain. Stunning photographs and illustrations will inspire you to start your own rock and fossil collections. Detailed information is given on how to identify the specimens you find and there is practical advice on how best to display and care for them.
David Roots is a geologist and geophysicist working in Sydney, Australia. He lectures on geology and organizes and leads geological field trips around the world.
Paul Willis worked as curator of vertebrates at the Macleay Museum, the University of Sydney, Australia. He is freelance consultant specializing in fossils and dinosaurs.
Robert R. Coenraads is a consultant specializing in gemstone, gold, and base metal exploration. He leads field trips in the Americas and the Pacific region.
Harrison 'Jack' Schmitt has the varied experience of a geologist, pilot, astronaut, businessman, and United States senator. After training as back-up Lunar Module Pilot for 'Apollo' 15, Schmitt served in that same capacity on 'Apollo' 17 – the last 'Apollo' lunar mission. In 1972, he became the only scientist and the last of 12 men to step on the Moon.
