In this novel, his seventh, Capt. Bruce B. Fisher ponders the age-old question: What if? Inspired by real-life experiences, he spins a tale of life at sea in beleaguered times, the 70s & 80s, of passé breakbulk freighters, when container ships muscled their way onto the scene and lives of mariners changed forever. While Fisher managed the transition from master mariner to maritime pilot at this critical juncture in the annals of shipping, many of his peers just sailed on facing the challenges of change. But how would he have handled this new reality had it been him sailing-on? What would his life have been like? Where would he have ended-up? In this tale Captain Fisher places himself not as pilot boarding a wallowing tanker off Brenton Reef on a dark and stormy night, but aboard Southern Cross in the idyllic tropics bound south of the line on the South American coast, the “Romance Run,” while imagining what intrigues, surprise challenges and temptations await. Times were as precarious as ever and… well, find out for yourself. Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate, marine pilot and master ship handler, Captain Bruce B. Fisher, with an accomplished and lengthy seagoing career, is now homeported in Newport, RI. with his wife, Claire.
