Unforgetting God: Defeating Culture-Destroying Materialism Through Christian Renewal

Materialism is the idea that matter moved by mindless forces explains all of reality. This radically secular philosophy dominates the minds of Western cultural elites and is at the root of tribalism in our politics, lawlessness in our courts, chaos in our universities, and the crisis of meaning rampaging among young people. In his thirty-eight years of practicing law, Barry Arrington has seen the toxic impact of materialism firsthand. From representing victims of the Columbine school shooting to litigating challenges to unconstitutional laws before the US Supreme Court, he has seen how materialism destroys lives and hollows out once vibrant cultural institutions. In Unforgetting God, Arrington shines a light on the path out of the soul-numbing materialist wilderness we find ourselves in. He demonstrates that materialism is false, even absurd, and points the way to a loving God who has revealed himself in Jesus Christ, who is our best hope for personal salvation and cultural renewal.

Advanced Praise for Unforgetting God:

The philosophy of materialism—the doctrine that only material things exist—has advanced mainly by stealing prestige from science. Yet, among much else in his marvelous book, Barry Arrington shows that the more modern science learns about nature, the more science itself undercuts materialism. From the realization that nature had a beginning, to the immateriality of the quantum world, to the discovery that DNA contains coded information, the more science advances, the more it points to the essential role of mind.
Michael J. Behe, Author of Darwin’s Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution

Barry Arrington brings a fresh perspective to the topic of materialism, the view that all of reality is merely an assembly of material particles controlled by mindless forces. As a seasoned litigator who has argued cases before the US Supreme Court, he shows how materialism has subverted legal theory by relativizing law and morality. But his critique of materialism doesn't stop there, showing how materialism subverts everything it touches. Critiques of materialism are typically made by scientists, philosophers, and theologians. His perspective as an attorney adds a particularly insightful dimension to the critique of materialism. Indeed, one wonders on reading this book whether attorneys acting in the courts will be the key to toppling materialism.
