Hardcover; Hardcover. Brown sueded boards with floral decoration to board edges in black. Boards are soiled and worn. Corners chipped and frayed. Spine appears to have been rebacked with newer brown suede. Title label on spine in gold on a small black leather square. Previous owner's name and inscription dated 1822 on inside paste down. Newer first endpaper. Frontis and Page 1 are missing. Page 2 has the full title: The Universal Penman; Or, the Art of Writing Made Useful To the Gentleman and Scholar, as well as the Man of Business. Exemplified in all the useful, and Ornamental Branches of Modern Penmanship; with some necessary Observation on the Excellency of the Pen, and a large Number of select Sentences in Prose and Verse; various forms of Business, relating to Merchandize and Trade; Letters on several Occasions; accurate Specimens of the Oriented Languages, and Alphabets in all the Hands now practised. Written, with the friendly assistance of several of the most Eminent Masters and Engrav'd by Geo. Bickham. The Whole Embelish'd with beautiful Decorations for the Amusement of the Curious. The next page should be Page 3 but it is not paginated. It is a beautiful dedication page to the King. Page 4 through 212 follow, with page 150 missing. In it's place is page 160, and the same page 160 is also in it's correct place after page 159. No rear endpaper. Binding is tight, pages are in nice condition for it's age, with occasional foxing and offset on all the blank versos. No pub date, circa 1760 printing, as it was Printed for Robert Sayer Map & Printseller at no. 53 Fleet St.; FOLIO.
