Riassunto:
Pioneering in the recovery trade, 1980s style!I am no scholar never have been, but I am a practical hands on sort of guy, I have tried to keep roughly in chronological order, though that`s not always the case, but as notes were not something any of us did at the time and I have had to use my own and the memories of other members of the yard team all of which have less selective memories than me! Please forgive my mistakes I was never a scholar, just a married man with two kids to support, trying to make his clumsy way in the rough and tumble world of road recovery.I have kept to the vehicles we started with, over the years now the yard has had a lot more machines pass through it, and some interesting folk, so perhaps another time I shall tell you about them! You will find that by the very nature of the beast “Recovery”, tends to be a trade that is practised mostly in the worse of conditions, pitch darkness, foul weather, snow, ice, floods, or even I can remember once…a hurricane as you will see. These wrecker-men, breakdown men, recovery men, call them what you will, be they one man with a land-rover or an old army truck with a hand winch up a rural byway, through to a team of a dozen men or more, with several “state of the art” machines working on a very fast motorway, they will still be as necessary tomorrow as they were when the wheel fell off the first chariot! To them all, I dedicate this collection of memories in the hope people will perhaps begin to recognise just what a necessary and sometimes difficult job that they do, usually under trying circumstances. Now… by the nature of the job as I have said, you find that we, big macho operators all, have moments of high drama and of sometimes intense sadness, even occasionally may it be said reducing these same usually strong and sometimes brutal men to tears some days, just to cope… so it pays to have a sense of humour and usually its black humour at that!
