Venture Capital (VC) generates economic prosperity by financing young, high growth firms and providing value-adding activities to portfolio companies. Multinational companies such as Apple, Facebook, Tesla, Intel, Microsoft, and many others, in their early years, have been financed with VC. In the VC industry, networks and personal ties are crucial to successful investments. Firms often co-invest with other peers in syndicated deals, generating a web of interconnected ties. In this book, the role of networks generated through syndicates and alliances on performance is explored. Recent studies show that networks have the potential to be both an asset as well as a liability for the focal actor (be it the VC firm or the portfolio company). Accrued benefits depend on the number of connections a firm has, the structure of its network, or the composition of the alliance. A contingency perspective is used to investigate the boundary conditions under which networks exert a positive rather than a negative effect on performance. This testing involves three levels of analysis: at the start-up, investors , and syndicate levels. Likewise, network characteristics are described and evaluated at three different levels. Both the bright side and the dark side of networks are discussed. The book is primarily aimed at an audience of graduate students and established scholars in entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance and networks.
