Jonson's plays, with their grotesquely obsessive characters, offer us unforgettable glimpses of a period of rapid socio-economic change. Every Man in his Humour presents the sexual fantasies of London's citizens and social climbers as the 'humours' that involuntarily create comedy. Sejanus, with its networks of spies and court informers, dramatizes the Jacobean system of censorship from which Jonson himself suffered. Volpone reveals Venice, the ideal Renaissance republic, as a hotbed of greed, sexual intrigue, and self interest, while in Epicone's London, a noise-hating misogynist decides to take a fashionable wife, with surprising qualifications.
