They live in the smell of fresh-cut hay, the sound of milk striking a pail before sunrise, the crunch of leaves beneath a long driveway, and the sight of vineyard rows stretching toward the horizon.

In Where the Rows Run Long, Larry D. Laine takes readers back to a small California farm where childhood was shaped by hard work, family, faith, laughter, loss, and the quiet beauty of ordinary days.

These are stories of growing up on a farm before childhood had a name for nostalgia. There are tractors and dairy barns, grape harvests and almond orchards, river adventures and blackberry picking. There are family gatherings filled with laughter, grandparents whose lessons lasted a lifetime, a homemade bicycle built from discarded parts, and summer days when the river seemed to belong entirely to two boys.

But farm life was not always gentle.

Behind the memories are fear, loneliness, family fractures, separation, grief, and moments a child could not fully understand until many years later. Through those experiences, Laine discovers that resilience is often formed quietly, through the work that must be done and the people who keep showing up.

The stories also reach across generations, from Finnish immigrant grandparents who crossed an ocean to build a new life in California to the family members whose words, habits, faith, and example continued to shape the author long after childhood ended.

Tender without being sentimental, Where the Rows Run Long is a rural memoir about family history, farm life, childhood memories, and the unexpected lessons hidden inside ordinary days.

It is a story about what the land gives us, what family leaves with us, and what remains long after we have left home.

If you have ever wondered which moments from your childhood made you who you are, come walk the long rows with Larry D. Laine.

Some journeys are measured in miles.

The most important ones are measured in the memories we carry.

We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone.
