Paperback. Some storms split your life into before and after. When Erica R. Buteau's twenty-three-year-old daughter developed necrotizing fasciitis and sepsis, their family was thrust into surgeries, a coma, an intensive-care nightmare, and a long recovery that changed everything. Erica searched for a book that could tell her how to survive the crisis as a mother without losing herself inside it. She could not find one.So she wrote it.Weathering the Storm: A Survival Guide for Parents of Adult Children in Crisis is a compassionate, unflinching guide for parents trying to help a grown child through circumstances no family is prepared to face. Medical catastrophe may be one kind of storm, but it is not the only one. Mental-health emergencies, suicidal thinking, psychosis, addiction, abusive relationships, arrest, homelessness, financial collapse, disability, estrangement, and devastating loss can all leave parents asking the same impossible questions: How much should I do? What can I control? Where does helping end and self-erasure begin? You may be the person everyone calls while privately wondering who is supposed to help you. You may love your child fiercely and still feel angry, exhausted, frightened, resentful, guilty, or numb. Those feelings do not make you a bad parent. They make you a human being living through something hard.Part memoir and part practical field guide, this book speaks directly to the painful gap between legal adulthood and a child's continuing need for support. Parents may be making calls, gathering records, managing emergencies, navigating agencies, protecting grandchildren, and holding a family together while having little legal authority and no clear roadmap.Inside, you will find support for: The book's weather-based framework moves from darkening skies and lightning strikes through crosswinds, stormy inner seas, invisible snowdrifts, and the search for safe harbor. An A-Z Emergency Weather Field Guide offers an additional resource for the moments when parents need direct, usable guidance more than another comforting phrase.Written without judgment or easy prescriptions, this guide recognizes that every family, adult child, crisis, and boundary is different. It offers steadiness and perspective without pretending there is one correct way to love someone through disaster. With a foreword from Erica's daughter, Kendra, Weathering the Storm honors both sides of the crisis: the adult child whose life and independence have been altered, and the parent trying to remain steady without taking over, falling apart, or disappearing. This is not a promise of an easy ending. It is a place to sit in the middle of the storm, name what is happening, find language for what hurts, and begin deciding what comes next.Love does not require you to disappear. You do not have to carry everything alone. No one should have to weather the next one alone, and even after life has been divided into before and after, survival is possible.A companion journal is also available for readers who want additional prompts, reflection, and space to work through their own family's experience. A compassionate, practical survival guide for parents helping adult children through medical, mental-health, addiction, legal, financial, or family crises while protecting their own well-being and boundaries. Some storms arrive with warning. Others split your life into before and after.
Erica R. Buteau went looking for this book during the worst nights of her life—between a trauma-hospital chapel, a Boston ICU, and the long road home to northern New Hampshire—while her twenty-three-year-old daughter fought necrotizing fasciitis, sepsis, repeated surgeries, a coma, and a recovery that changed the family. She could not find the book she needed. So she wrote it.
Weathering the Storm is a compassionate, unflinching survival guide for parents of adult children in crisis.
Maybe your child is facing a medical catastrophe, suicidal thinking, psychosis, addiction, an abusive relationship, arrest, financial collapse, homelessness, disability, estrangement, or devastating loss. Maybe the emergency has passed, but your body is still living inside it. Maybe you are so exhausted you barely recognize yourself.
You are not weak. You are not failing. And you are not the only parent awake at two in the morning wondering what comes next.
Part raw memoir, part practical field guide, this book braids one family’s harrowing true story with research-informed guidance, scripts, checklists, reflection prompts, and hard-won tools for the moments when your voice is shaking.
Inside, you will find:
- An A–Z Emergency Weather Field Guide covering 26 crisis situations, with immediate triage, next steps, pitfalls, and words to borrow.
- Guidance for medical advocacy, privacy barriers, legal documents, discharge planning, benefits, disability systems, and crisis bureaucracy.
- Plain-language help for suicidal risk, mania, psychosis, involuntary evaluation, addiction, domestic violence, arrest, and housing instability.
- Practical boundaries that separate support from rescue without pretending love is simple.
- Honest conversations about guilt, resentment, burnout, money, marriage under pressure, overlooked siblings, and parenting differently than expected.
- Grounding tools, safety resources, and small next steps for a nervous system still reacting to helicopters, alarms, unknown numbers, anniversaries, and the quiet after crisis.
This book will not tell you to “let go” as if love has an off switch. It will not shame you for helping, glorify self-sacrifice, rank one family’s pain against another’s, or pretend every story ends in recovery.
Instead, it asks better questions: What is yours to carry? What requires professional help? When does care become rescue? How do you protect your child without disappearing? How do you remain a parent without becoming the entire treatment plan, crisis line, bank, chauffeur, case manager, and safety net?
With New Hampshire grit, dark humor, fierce love, and empathy, Buteau writes from inside the storm. She understands the hospital chair that does not recline far enough, the form listing the wrong person, the marriage strained by two trauma responses, the sibling whose milestone is overshadowed, and the guilt that can remain even after the child survives.
Love does not require you to disappear.
Weathering the Storm offers company, language, preparation, and a steadier place to stand. It reminds parents that safety comes first, boundaries can protect love, and support should reflect actual capacity.
A companion journal is also available separately for readers who want guided prompts, Weather Checks, Beacons of Light, and more room to process what they are carrying.
If your adult child’s crisis has left you invisible, terrified, angry, guilty, or unprepared, this is the hand on your shoulder—and the map—you have been looking for.
No one should have to weather the storm alone.
