Britain's pavements are not suffering from a weed problem. They are suffering from a maintenance problem, and the weeds are simply the most visible sign of it.

In this authoritative and practical book, Sean Faulkner draws on decades of hands-on experience managing hard surfaces across Britain to make the case that reactive weed control, spray, cut, repeat, is not just ineffective. It is actively accelerating the decay of the infrastructure it is supposed to protect.

The argument is built on evidence: the Bracknell Integrated Weed Management Trial, network audits covering tens of thousands of complaint and repair records, and field observations from local authorities across the country. What the data shows is consistent. Weed pressure, drainage failure and carriageway deterioration are not separate problems with separate solutions. They are three symptoms of the same upstream cause, treated by three different budget lines, while the common root of all three goes unaddressed. Accumulated detritus, left unmanaged until ecological succession has already taken hold, drives all of them.

This book gives practitioners a framework for seeing surfaces differently. It explains how organic material accumulates, how succession progresses through identifiable stages, how each stage demands a different intervention, and how the economics of neglect compound silently until the cost of recovery dwarfs the cost of prevention.

Written for local authority officers, highway contractors, elected members and anyone responsible for the condition of public space, The Weeds Are Not the Problem connects ecological science to operational reality and makes the case, clearly, practically, and with the evidence to back it up, for integrated weed management as a discipline, not just a product category.

The weeds were never really the problem. This book explains what was.
