His road trips in search of bizarre attractions have yielded <i>Minnesota Marvels</i> and <i>Midwest Marvels</i>, published by the University of Minnesota Press. He lived in Italy for four years, where he ate pig trotters and cow brains, followed by a year as a Fulbright Fellow in Trondheim, Norway, where he feasted on rakfisk (fermented fish).
