When You Fail to Parent
by Erik Von Schmidt
A child does not become lost overnight.
There are warnings first.
The tantrum no one corrects. The lie no one confronts. The teacher no one believes. The victim no one protects. The police report everyone pretends is a misunderstanding. The cruelty excused as personality. The rage dismissed as a phase. The disrespect laughed off until it grows teeth.
Then one day the phone rings.
Your child has been expelled.
Your child has been arrested.
Your child has hurt someone.
Your child is dead.
When You Fail to Parent is a dark, emotional, nonfiction novel about what happens when love is mistaken for permission, when protection becomes enabling, and when parents refuse to do the hard work until the world does it for them.
Erik Von Schmidt examines the devastating chain reaction of failed parenting through stories that feel painfully familiar: the spoiled child who learns rules do not matter; the bully defended by parents who blame everyone else; the teenager whose anger is ignored until it becomes violence; the reckless driver who turns a night of showing off into a funeral procession; the unstable child whose warning signs are dismissed until murder or suicide becomes the final consequence.
This is not a comfortable book.
It is not written for parents who want to be praised for loving their children while refusing to guide them. It is not written for mothers and fathers who think discipline is cruelty, boundaries are oppression, and accountability is someone else’s responsibility. It is written for every parent who has confused silence with peace, excuses with compassion, and surrender with love.
Because children do not need parents who are afraid of them.
They do not need friends with authority they never use.
They do not need defenders of their worst behavior.
They need mothers and fathers willing to stand between them and destruction, even when the child hates them for it.
The consequences of failed parenting do not remain inside the home. They spill into classrooms, neighborhoods, highways, courtrooms, jail cells, hospital rooms, and cemeteries. A child who is never taught no may one day hear it from a police officer. A child who is never taught consequences may one day learn them from a judge. A child whose rage is never addressed may one day make another family bury someone they love.
And sometimes the grieving parent is left asking how it happened, when the truth is that it happened slowly, in all the moments they refused to act.
When You Fail to Parent is a warning written in the language of heartbreak.
Raise your children before the streets do.
Correct them before the courts do.
Reach them before death does.
Because once the doorbell rings, once the sirens arrive, once the body is identified, once the sentence is read, love without discipline will not be enough to save them.
