Paperback. "The White Friars" offers a comprehensive and illuminating historical survey of the Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, more widely known as the Carmelites. P. R. McCaffrey meticulously traces the lineage of the order from its origins among the hermits of Mount Carmel in the Holy Land to its eventual establishment and expansion as a major mendicant order across Europe. The work explores the unique identity of the "White Friars," so named for their distinctive white cloaks, and highlights their significant contributions to the religious and intellectual life of the Middle Ages and beyond. The narrative delves into the order's spiritual foundations, the lives of its most prominent figures, and the various reforms that shaped its development over centuries. By examining the Carmelites' role within the broader framework of the Catholic Church, the book provides valuable insights into the evolution of monastic traditions and the enduring legacy of Carmelite spirituality. "The White Friars" serves as both a scholarly record and a compelling narrative for those interested in church history, theology, and the history of religious institutions. It remains a vital resource for understanding the communal life and devotional practices that have sustained this order for generations. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it.
