Neuware - 'William Caxton (1424-1491)' is a scholarly and engaging biography of the father of English printing. Written by bibliographer Henry R. Plomer, the work offers a detailed account of Caxton's life and his monumental contribution to the spread of knowledge and literature in the late 15th century. The narrative follows Caxton from his origins in the Weald of Kent through his successful career as a merchant and diplomat in Bruges, where he first encountered the revolutionary art of typography. Plomer illustrates how Caxton's passion for literature led him to translate and print the first book in English, eventually establishing his famous press at Westminster. The work examines Caxton's significant influence on the English language, noting his efforts to standardize spelling and grammar through his editorial choices and translations of classical and contemporary works.Focusing on the intersection of commerce and culture, 'William Caxton (1424-1491)' provides a fascinating look at the birth of the English publishing industry and the transition from manuscript to print.
