Riassunto:

Epic new biography of Karl Marx for the 200th anniversary of his birth

In this essential new biography—the first to give equal weight to both the work and life of Karl Marx—Sven-Eric Liedman expertly navigates the imposing, complex personality of his subject through the turbulent passages of global history. A World to Win follows Marx through childhood and student days, a difficult and sometimes tragic family life, his far-sighted journalism, and his enduring friendship and intellectual partnership with Friedrich Engels.

Building on the work of previous biographers, Liedman employs a commanding knowledge of the nineteenth century to create a definitive portrait of Marx and his vast contribution to the way the world understands itself. He shines a light on Marx’s influences, explains his political and intellectual interventions, and builds on the legacy of his thought. Liedman shows how Marx’s masterpiece, Capital, illuminates the essential logic of a system that drives dizzying wealth, grinding poverty, and awesome technological innovation to this day.

Compulsively readable and meticulously researched, A World to Win demonstrates that, two centuries after Marx’s birth, his work remains the bedrock for any true understanding of our political and economic condition.

Informazioni sull?autore: Sven-Eric Liedman, Professor Emeritus of the History of Ideas at the University of Gothenburg, has been reading and writing about Karl Marx for over fifty years. His textbook on political ideologies (originally titled From Plato to Lenin in 1972, rechristened From Plato to the War Against Terrorism in 2014) has been through fourteen editions.

Paperback. Condizione: Near Fine. Karl Marx has had an impressive afterlife for someone who spent much of his actual life worrying about money, arguing with friends, and not quite finishing his magnum opus. World to Win: The Life and Works of Karl Marx by Sven-Eric Liedman takes on the enviable task of explaining both the man and the ideas, which is rather like trying to catalogue a storm while standing in it. This is not a brisk pamphlet. It is a large, thoughtful, occasionally formidable biography that follows Marx from student radical to exiled intellectual, from newspaper man to library-haunting theorist, from friend of Engels to the author of works that would be read, misread, adopted, weaponised, and quoted far more widely than he ever managed to get paid. Liedman does something rather useful: he treats Marx as a human being rather than a monument. The result is a portrait of someone brilliant, stubborn, often exasperating, and deeply embedded in the turbulent politics and economic transformations of the 19th century. There are debts, illnesses, arguments, and the constant struggle to turn big ideas into finished writing, which may feel reassuringly familiar to anyone who has ever had a deadline. There is, of course, a rich layer of irony here. Marx, the critic of capitalism, now firmly installed as a subject within the global book market. His ideas, once dangerous, now neatly bound, barcoded, and sold in good condition by Crappy Old Books. History does enjoy a quiet joke. Yet the book never becomes flippant. It takes seriously the scale of Marx?s thinking, the ambition of his project, and the reasons why his work continues to matter, whether one agrees with it or not. It is as much about the 19th century as it is about the intellectual machinery that still hums underneath modern debates about inequality, labour, and power. This good copy, as sold by Crappy Old Books, is ideal for readers of intellectual history, political theory, and anyone who suspects that the world did not simply arrange itself by accident. A substantial read, certainly?but then so was Marx. Codice articolo 6183

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Karl Marx has fascinated and inspired generations of radicals in the past 200 years. In this new, definitive biography, Sven-Eric Liebman makes his work live once more for a new generation. Despite 200 years having passed since his birth, his burning condemnation of capitalism remains of immediate interest. Now, more than ever before, Marx's texts can be read for what they truly are. In addition to providing a living picture of Marx the man, his life, and his family and friends - as well as his lifelong collaboration with Friedrich Engels - Sweden's leading intellectual historian Sven-Eric Liedman, in this major new biography, shows what Karl Marx the thinker and researcher really wrote, demonstrating that this giant of the nineteenth century can still exert a powerful attraction for the inhabitants of the twenty-first. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Codice articolo GOR011778787
