Informazioni sull?autore: Sven-Eric Liedman, Professor Emeritus of the History of Ideas at the University of Gothenburg, has been reading and writing about Karl Marx for over fifty years. His textbook on political ideologies (originally titled From Plato to Lenin in 1972, rechristened From Plato to the War Against Terrorism in 2014) has been through fourteen editions.

World to Win: The Life and Works of Karl Marx by Sven-Eric Liedman takes on the enviable task of explaining both the man and the ideas, which is rather like trying to catalogue a storm while standing in it. This is not a brisk pamphlet. It is a large, thoughtful, occasionally formidable biography that follows Marx from student radical to exiled intellectual, from newspaper man to library-haunting theorist, from friend of Engels to the author of works that would be read, misread, adopted, weaponised, and quoted far more widely than he ever managed to get paid. Liedman does something rather useful: he treats Marx as a human being rather than a monument. The result is a portrait of someone brilliant, stubborn, often exasperating, and deeply embedded in the turbulent politics and economic transformations of the 19th century. There are debts, illnesses, arguments, and the constant struggle to turn big ideas into finished writing, which may feel reassuringly familiar to anyone who has ever had a deadline.
