Immigration, Settlement, and the Origins of the Christian Reformed Church in the Maritime Provinces of Canada, c. 1950 – c. 1965 G. H. Gerrits. Kentville, N.S.: Vinland Press, 2015. 310 pp. Bibliography. Index. Illustrated When Reformed Protestants from the Netherlands first settled in the Maritimes around 1950, the American-based Christian Reformed Church, which has Dutch roots, sent so-called home missionaries and fieldmen to the Maritimes to organize the Reformed Protestants into congregations. The financial assistance offered to the immigrant farmers – and the bulk of them were farmers – by the government of Nova Scotia, in particular, made this province an attractive place to settle and also drew Dutch immigrant farmers from other parts of Canada, especially Ontario after they had settled there first.
