Peter Wohl, the author of Wild Mind, Wild Heart: Discover Your True Self in Nature is clear about his intentions in writing this book:
“For several decades we have tried to awaken people to respect and care for our Mother Earth, often using fear, guilt, and shame as our primary tools. Rather than rallying people to act, that has largely resulted in paralysis, in denial and in reinforcing the desire to escape from and deflect the truth. If we are to prevail in this existential struggle to transform our culture into one that respects, preserves, and protects all things wild, rather than one that exploits and destroys, we must restore an intimate spiritual relationship with the natural world, with All Our Relations.”
Indigenous cultures understood this, but as we became “civilized” we entered the wild places as colonizers, who chose to dominate and destroy, rather than as respectful guests. Restoring eco-spiritual intimacy is the path to building a new relationship with our wild relatives. Those of us who have been raised in the dominant Euro-centric consumerist culture have lost access to that path. This book was written to encourage and support people in the process of journeying together to discover that relationship and the tremendous promise of greater hope and happiness that it offers.
As an author, Peter is anxious to engage with readers, as we collectively move forward in healing and re-wilding the earth. He has travelled his own journey from a childhood in New York City to the hills of Vermont and eventually to central Maine, where he now lives in the woods that he loves. Peter is also a Zen Buddhist teacher and a Registered Maine Guide.
