Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. First Edition. Hardcover, First Edition 1955 Bruce Publishing 250 pages. Near Fine, in a Very Good+ DJ. Aquamarine cloth with gilt titles - corners sharp. Just a touch of shelf/edge wear to unclipped DJ - now in mylar. Previous owner small and plain address label on FFEP. All pages are bright, clean and crisp with no sign of age-toning - book would be graded fine if not for the label. This is a novel of the post-atomic age, when civilization has been almost completely destroyed and the only people who remain are widely scattered "islands of humanity" living very much the way they did in the Stone Age. [The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction and Fantasy by Tuck, page 233 - "The story of eight men's efforts to preserve the Church after the breakdown of a war-town civilization?.] The author was one of the most highly regarded Catholic book critics in the United States in the last century. Riley Hughes was a contributor to the Catholic Standard, the Saturday Review and Commonweal magazines. He also reviewed fiction for the Catholic World. He taught English at Georgetown for 34 years and in 1960, he helped found the annual Georgetown University writers conference and served as its director. Between 1960 and 1980, he wrote a monthly book review column for "Columbia," the publication of the Knights of Columbus. He died on March 8, 1981. Unusual First Edition post-apocalyptic novel of America, from the Catholic point of view, in scarce DJ. Seldom seen with a DJ, this is the nicest copy I?ve seen in the last fifteen years - LOC SSE-4.
