A Venise par Francois Santini rue S.te Justine pres de la dite Eglise, Chez Mr. RemondiniA striking and highly detailed example of Santinis edition of the Janvier copper engraved map of the African continent as well as the islands of Madagascar and the adjacent parts of Europe, Turkey, Middle East, Aravia and Persia. The map is filled with excellent topographic details on cities, towns, rivers, ;ales, reliefs and islands. Like most 18th century maps of Africa, the present example is rife with speculation regarding the largely unexplored interior. The map includes a large inset map of the Cape of Good Hope and a second inset map of the Isle de France (Reunion). A strapwork title cartouche and a simple legend cartouche complete the map. First published in Atlas Universel dresses sur les meuilleures cartes modernes printed in Venice between 1776 and 1784.Size approx 75.8cm 53.2cm including margins. Very strong and dark impression on good paper.
