Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition, published in 1969. The book was first published in the USA earlier that year by McGraw-Hill International. ***Near fine in red cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine slightly creased, otherwise no bumps. Corners sharp. The top edge of the page block is stained purple by the publisher, but is faded now and slightly darkened, otherwise the page block edges are clean - only very slightly marked. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions. Interior pages clean. There is a light production crease affecting the rear free endpaper and last few pages - hardly noticeable. ***In a very good typographical dustwrapper, which has not been price-clipped, retaining the original publisher's printed dual price of 42s net / £2.10 net. The dustwrapper is complete, with some light edge-wear, and a small scuff to the top edge of the back panel. There is also some creasing to the top of the spine. The colour of the spine of the dustwrapper is hardly faded at all, which is unusual for this title, and the red and purple titles are also only gently faded - much less than is usually found with this title. No major faults to the dustwrapper. ***220mm x146mm. 589 pages. ***'Ardis Hall - the Ardors and Arbors of Ardis - this is the leitmotiv rippling through ADA, an ample and delightful chronicle, whose principle part is staged in a dream-bright America - for are not American childhood memories comparable to Vineland-born caravellas, indolently encircled by the white birds of dreams? ***In spite of the many intricacies of plot and psychology, the story proceeds at a spanking pace. Before we can pause to take breath and quietly survey the new surroundings into which the writer's magic carpet has, as it were, spilled us, another attractive girl, Lucette Veen, Marina's younger daughter, has also been swept off her feet by Van, the irresistible rake. Her tragic destiny constitutes one of the highlights of this delightful book.' (Quote taken from the front flap of dustwrapper) ***First impression of the first UK edition. The book is large and bulky, and the dustwrapper is prone to curling and tearing, so copies in this near fine condition are most uncommon. Of interest to collectors of the work of Vladimir Nabokov and twentieth century literary first edition titles. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc. Codice articolo 9296
