Bedford in each volume. Top edges gilt. The Adventures of Roderick Random is a picaresque novel by Tobias Smollett, first published in 1748. It is partially based on Smollett's experience as a naval-surgeon’s mate in the Royal Navy, especially during the Battle of Cartagena de Indias in 1741. The three books form volumes 1 to 3 of the publisher's collected works of Tobia Smollett, edited by George Saintsbury in twelve volumes.The books are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the spines and front boards. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear on the boards and the spines have faded to a light brown colour. The top of the spine of the first volume is bumped with some fraying to the cloth and the bottom of the spine of volumes 1 and 3 are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers and a few scattered light foxing marks elsewhere within the books, including some marks on the frontispiece illustrations and title pages. There is a small private ex-libris label on the front fixed endpapers of volumes 2 and 3 and traces of a removed label on the front fixed endpaper of volume 1.…
