Dust jacket rubbed and lightly soiled/foxed; small chip at spine head; nicks at other edges; strong vertical crease to rear flap; publisher's printed price "$5.75" present at front flap's top right. Black cloth spine and red boards; spine decorated with white and red stamped lettering (some flaking to red lettering); front board's bottom fore-edge corner bumped. Muted red top edge with a few small stains; slight foxing/soiling to fore-edge and bottom edge. Top corner of pages 419-420 creased from past fold down; slight bumping to leaves' bottom fore-edge corners; interior pages are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Generally Viking distinguished first printings by a "First published . . ." statement but with this book "First" was evidently dropped; the book's second and later printings have specific statements as such upon the copyright page.
