(list of) contributors. index. art history. history of africa. world history. art books.~This dazzling book presents contemporary African art as it has never before been seen. Instead of traditional, "primitive" forms, we see brilliantly colored paintings and sculptures fresh from the hands of sixty outstanding sub~Saharan artists, almost all of whom are introduced here to Western audiences for the first time: For even though modern African music, dance, and literature have entered the international scene, the visual arts of the present remain largely unknown. The pages of this volume reflect an explosion of African art that goes beyond ethnic or regional lines The new artistic landscape of Africa is extremely diversified traditions are sometimes revived, sometimes completely reinvented; we see new figuration, mural painting, abstraction, expressionism, appropriation of objects, even agit~art. The book moves from those artists most closely aligned with ancestral, tribal forms to those for whom the ties to tradition have loosened. To bring us close to the artists as individuals, and to illuminate the sources and significance of the many exotic aspects of their work, the editors, who jointly have spent over twenty years in Africa, and twenty~nine contributors with firsthand knowledge about the artists, provide brief biographies as well as analyses and appreciations of the works. Among the contributors are art critics, museum curators, and notables such as the sculptor Louise Bourgeois and the designer Ettore Sottsass. More than half of the works illustrated in this book come from the outstanding Contemporary African Art Collection of Jean Pigozzi, which is unparalleled in its broad representation of today's African art. The Pigozzi Collection "is unquestionably the most important, the most varied of all the ones in Europe or in the U.S.A." (Hervé Chandes, Curator, Cartier Foundation for Contemporary Art, Paris). "The first~class quality of Jean Pigozzi's collection ~ unique in the world is such that it opens up to us the living art of an entire continent" (Marie~Claude Beaud, General Director of the American Center, Paris).
