Scattered light rubbing at jacket edges and rear upper spine edge area (see photographs). All pages are in fine unmarked condition and the binding is exceedingly tight and square (see photos). The copyright page states: "First Random House, Inc., Edition" with the appropriate first printing number line. "A classic . An evocative portrait of almost two decades of immigrant travail in the West 30s of New York, the novel is lifted into literature by its highly charged language, its penetrating insights, and its mixture of tenderness and rage." - The New York Times Book Review. "Before The Godfather and The Last Don, Mario Puzo wrote The Fortunate Pilgrim, a novel many believe to be one of the classics of Italian-American fiction. Writing about Puzo in 1996, New York magazine called The Fortunate Pilgrim "a beautiful book with perfect sentences, a book that could have put Puzo on track to be the Italian Malamud or Henry Roth." Although The Fortunate Pilgrim is Mario Puzo's personal favorite among his own works, it never found a readership and has been out of print for years. Now, in this special edition, Mario Puzo's legions of fans will discover a different side of this legendary author, writing for the first time about an Italian family in which a woman holds the power. The Fortunate Pilgrim is about the loves, crimes, and struggles in the family of this unforgettable woman. Lucia Santa has traveled three thousand miles of dark ocean, from the mountain farms of Italy to the streets of New York, hoping for a better life. Instead, she finds herself in Hell's Kitchen, in a bad marriage, raising six children on her own. As Lucia struggles to hold her family together, her daughter confronts the adult world of work and romance while her eldest son is drawn into the mafia. Meanwhile, her youngest son aspires to American pursuits she cannot understand. By turns poignant, comic, and violent, The Fortunate Pilgrim is Mario Puzo's most personal and deeply felt portrait of family life. It confirms his status as one of America's greatest storytellers." - from the inner front jacket flap.…

Descrizione dello Store
Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
