Descrizione dell’articolo da parte del venditore

This is an antique copy of "A History of the Rise, Progress, and Present Condition of the BETHLEHEM FEMALE SEMINARY. With a Catalogue of its Pupils. 1785-1858" by William C. Reichel. 1858 1st edition; J.B. Lippincott & Co.; Philadelphia. Nicely illustrated with full-page engraved portraits and scenic views (each with a tissue guard). Included in the list of pupils is "Margaret Peyton," the grand-niece of Thomas Jefferson (Jefferson paid for her tuition in 1809). The book documents the founding, evolution, and daily operations of the Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania - widely recognized as the first Protestant boarding school for girls in the United States. It serves as a historical record and a "souvenir" volume (with "Souvenir" stamped in gilt on both covers) for the school's alumni and the public, detailing several core components: Institutional Evolution & The Moravian Legacy; 18th and 19th-Century Female Education; Student & Institutional Archives. Because the Bethlehem Female Seminary later evolved into the Moravian Seminary and College for Women, and eventually merged to become today's Moravian University, Reichel's book is highly valued by modern historians. It remains a vital primary text for researchers studying regional Pennsylvania history, Moravian religious life, and the early history of women's secondary education in America. Condition: Some very light soiling to the covers and spine. Ex-library with a label at the top of the spine and on the front pastedown, and a date slip affixed to the rear pastedown. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Both covers are firmly attached. The front beige end paper has been removed. The title page has a dark ink stain at the top edge, which has left a tanned outline on the frontispiece the tissue guard, and and the first 3 preface pages. The 1st two. The first 5 preface pages have a small stain spots at the outer margin. The text pages are in nice condition - mostly clean with only an occasional small smudge and foxing spot here and there. Page 452 has a name written in old pencil handwriting at the inner margin. Overall the book is in Good condition.
