THE WORKS OF LORD BYRON. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Printed in 1821-1824. With the FIRST EDITION of 'A CHARACTER OF LORD BYRON BY SIR WALTER SCOTT'. Byron died in 1824. Printed in Paris due to censorship and suppression of his works. Includes a 'Memoir Of The Right Honorable Lord Byron'. Also includes 'A Character Of Lord Byron by Sir Walter Scott'. LORD BYRON'S COMPLETE WORKS. Volume 12 contains the biography by Sir Walter Scott. This biography is 77 pages. An early presumably abridged version appeared in The Guardian on June 12, 1824, shortly after Byron's death. Here appearing as the first edition in standalone book form, in 1824, in 77 pages. This Character has the following preface: This Character of the deceased Poet is by Sir Walter Scott. It is every way worthy of his pen, and the liberality of a man of genius. The mention of Don Juan in particular, is manly and excellent. But we cannot help asking Sir Walter one question:â"Why did he not publish these opinions of Lord Byron in the life-time of the latter, when such a character from such an authority would have done real service to its living subject, and have silenced those yelping curs in the kennels of literature, who were incessantly barking at the moral and literary reputation of a grossly calumniated genius? (The examâ") [The Examiner] First Collected Edition. Printed in 1821-1824. This set is over 200 years old. Complete in 12 volumes The bindings are the original bindings. Leather supple. All hinges sound. This set was completed upon Byron's death. It includes the biography by Sir Walter Scott. This set precedes the set by Thomas Moore in 1832. Provenance. Bookplate From the Library Of Kenneth Monkman at Shandy Hall. Shandy Hall is a writer's house museum in the former home of the Rev. Laurence Sterne in Coxwold, North Yorkshire, England. Sterne lived there from 1760 to 1768 as perpetual curate of Coxwold. The house now known as Shandy Hall dates from around 1430 and would certainly have had a garden to supply the inhabitants with herbs and vegetables. The house has been lived in continuously for nearly 600 years by various families who have changed and developed the shape and character of the gardens. The house became a parsonage in the early eighteenth century. Laurence Sterne came to live at Shandy Hall when he was appointed Perpetual Curate in 1760. The Laurence Sterne Trust was established in 1964 to make Shandy Hall a public museum. Kenneth and Julia Monkman took up residence and while Kenneth devoted himself to his collection and the study of Sterne, Julia set about creating a garden with over 100 roses and unusual perennials that became an attraction in its own right. Purchased from a bookseller in the United Kingdom and imported into the United States. These books measure approximately 7 inches tall. These are smaller sized books. In good to very good condition. The bindings are original. Leather supple. Hinges sound. Some starting but held strong. Some extremity abrasion. Bindings are the original publishers bindings. Quality rag paper. Some foxing. Some tide marks as shown in the pictures. Early bookplate provenance From the Library Of Kenneth Monkman Shandy Hall. Complete in 12 volumes with the biography by Scott in volume 12.
