Dickson was one of the first American researchers in abstract algebra, in particular the theory of finite fields and classical groups; he ''. . . presented a unified, complete, and general theory of the classical linear groups . . . his book represented the first systematic treatment of finite fields in the mathematical literature.''(see K.
