First edition, first printing. First issue with "Whip" on page 50, line 13. Bound in publisher's black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine, black topstain; lacking the dust jacket. Very Good with lean to spine, light rubbing and dampstaining to boards, and slight bumping to corners. Light toning and scattered foxing throughout, bookseller ticket to back pastedown. Hall's book faced a wave of suppression as the plot follows the life of a lesbian, openly portraying her "sexual inversion" as natural during a time when homosexuality was not openly discussed. A contemporary newspaper clipping laid in ("Banned Novel to be Destroyed") quotes the presiding magistrate in the court case: "I have no hesitation whatever in saying it is an obscene libel. It would tend to corrupt those into whose hands it should fall, and the publication of this book is an offence against public decency, an obscene libel, and I shall order it to be destroyed.".
