First edition. 8vo. #204 of 350 Numbered copies. Decorated pictorial fabricoid, with title in gilt on the front cover, 128 [5] pp., illustrated from photographs, bibliography, index. Photographs by Edgar M. Ledyard and the author. The story of Caleb Greenwood, trapper, trailblazer, and pioneer. An absorbing biography of one who was already an old man when he joined the Fur Brigade. As an octogenarian he piloted the Ide Party over the Sierra Nevada in 1845, Greenwood was involved with many of the great happenings that shaped the Western history. This book deals with his early life in the fur trade, his important role in the overland emigration to California in 1844-1845, his subsequent contribution as one of the more important trailblazers and guides, his part in the relief of the Donner Party, and his activities along the American River after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848. Information on Lewis and Clark, Kit Carson, Jim Bridger, James P. Beckwourth, Manuel Lisa, Patrick Gass, Joseph L. Meek, and much more. A fine copy in the scarce dust jacket. This is rather an attractive copy of the first printing of Mr Kelly's book, in a dust jacket that exhibits nearly every fault possible. The publisher's embossed leatherette binding is sturdy, with light wear to its corners and to the head and foot of its spine; a previous owner's signature is at the front pastedown as is the residue (ca one inch by one inch) of a small piece of tape, else the contents are fine. The price-clipped dust jacket, now in Mylar, is worn, torn, and chipped, its front flap detached, with a three-inch length of transparent tape at its front panel. 420 grams. Codice articolo 014690

From his early days along the Missouri River as a trapper until years later as an octogenarian he piloted the Ide Party over the Sierra Nevada in 1845, Greenwood was involved with many of the great happenings that shaped the Western history. This book deals with his early life in the fur trade, his important role in the overland emigration to California in 1844-1845, his subsequent contribution as one of the more important trailblazers and guides, his part in the relief of the Donner Party, and his activities along the American River after the discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill in 1848. Kelly originally authored and privately published this book in 1936. In a letter several years later, now in the Charles Kelly Papers at the Utah Historical Society, Morgan wrote that he had a "whole raft corrections" for the book should Kelly ever decide to revise it.
