VERY RARE gilded & embossed illustrated hardcover book. "Railways and Their Rates; with an Appendix on the British Canal Problem" By Edwin A. Pratt. This is the First Edition, published by John Murray, London, 1905. 8vo, 20.6 cm x 14 cm x 4.2 cm. Red cloth-covered boards with gilt embossed lettering on spine & front cover, Unevenly cut & rough-cut pages, no dust-jacket. 361 pages. Weight: 547 Grams. CONTENTS ARE LIKE NEW!!! However, there is a crack between endpaper & adjacent blank page, and there are splits in between endpapers & pastedowns at front & rear of book. Spine is discoloured & slightly marked, bumped, scuffed & a little frayed either end, gilt dull. Cover is rubbed & slightly marked, bumped on front, edge wear. Corners bumped & scuffed. Top outer edge darkened & scuffed. Mark on top edge of front pastedowns at front & rear of book. Illustration plates all present. Some pages are creased alongside spine, and/or have corner folds/creases. Small area of darker tanning on pages 62 & 63. Light age tanning & very rare foxing throughout.
