Original quarter leather and cloth, marbled front and rear endpapers, all page edges are marbled, xxiii [blank], 700 [1] pp., frontispiece [portrait of the author], preface, introduction, illustrated, portraits, appendices. Illustrated by portraits of the author, Gen. Canby, Dr. Thomas, Capt. Jack, Schonchin, Scar-Faced Charley, Black Jim, Boston Charley, Tobey and Riddle, and eleven other. A former Superintendent of Indian Affairs, Meacham served as chairman of the Modoc War Peace Commission, and Cowan notes that "this work on the Modoc War was written by a most competent author on the subject, making this volume of great historic value." The illustrations are portraits of the principals in the war, as well as "Spirited and Life-like Engravings, of actual scenes from Modoc Indian life, as witnessed by the author." Six Guns 1475 says: "Has much on Captain Jack, the Modoc outlaw." An extremely difficult title to find in the deluxe binding. This is our first copy in many years.
