xxiv, 290 p. ; 19 cm. The anonymously publ.Italian work was put on the Index librorum prohibitorum by decree of 17 mart. 1908. Described in M. Rava, Bibliografia degli scritti di Ernesto Buonaiuti, no. 167: `Al Programma collaborarono anche altri ecclesiastici.' (p. 12) -- In Buonaiuti's later description of this work, `It was not a systematic exposition or treatise. It did not contain any hidden intent of `getting even', much less of vindictive retort. It was published as an act of faith. It was meant to be a profession of Christianity. It was a confession of humility and of hope. It should have been judged in that light and not in any other way. Unfortunately the confession was disdainfully cast aside, the act of faith was derided. In consequence, both Italy and the Church were to suffer immeasurably. The encyclical Pascendi had accused the Modernists of setting out from rationalistic postulates to rise up against the venerable and sacrosanct legacy of the Catholic tradition, as administered by the Church of Rome. The Programme replied that the Modernists were in no sense rationalists, moving from systematic philosophical preconceptions. It declared rather that the spiritual crisis which lay at the roots of Modernism was not at all a crisis of a theoretical nature to be compared, for example, to that which had led Roberto Ardigo from a Scholastic position to one of materialism and positivism.' (Il pellegrino di Roma, 1945; as translated in Pilgrim of Rome, 1969, p. 64 f.) -- An English translation of the encyclical is included on p. 175-290. Good orig.blue cloth, sides spotted. Pages toned, sl. pencilling.
