Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 178 p., color and b/w ills. Within the scope of its 10th year, Istanbul Modern presents "Plurivocality", an exhibition investigating the interrelations between auditory and visual arts through a selection of contemporary artwork in Turkey. Exploring the close bond the visual arts have established with sound and music from past to present, "Plurivocality" reveals the special personal and social roles music plays in artistic processes. The exhibition features current works by artists that treat the visual and the auditory not as distinct disciplines, but rather as two fields that work in tandem. The paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations in the exhibition render sound and music visually as a theme, concept, or issue, using different forms of music and sound as metaphors and means of expression. The exhibition also serves as a source for understanding the cultural and sociopolitical role sound and music play in Turkey and how various music trends have influenced visual art practices. A research area at the entrance of the exhibition hall, "Repertoire" explores the intersections between music and the visual arts in Turkey as well as past collaborations between actors in the two fields. "Repertoire" is an initiative that examines Turkey's sociocultural history from the late Ottoman era to the 1980s via its reflections in the visual arts and music.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (27.5 x 23.5 cm). In Turkish and English. Color and B/w photos and ills. 91, [5] p. Within the framework of the celebrations of 400 years of diplomatic relations between the Netherlands and Turkey, Istanbul Modern is hosting the exhibition La La La Human Steps: A Selection from the Collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen. The show consists of a special selection gathered for Istanbul Modern by Sjarel Ex, Director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, from the museum's collection of over 140 thousand works. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen was founded in 1849 and is one of the Netherland's most renowned museums with a worldwide reputation. Bringing together old masters and prominent contemporary artists, La La La Human Steps is a show that focuses on human relations in today's world. It is possible to translate, at historical, personal, and public levels, many themes pertaining to humanity, human relations, and our struggle to cope with life as human beings. Hence the show takes "us" as its starting point. While on the one hand the exhibition explores the individual's desire to find answers to personal issues, on the other it questions the ways in which individuals confront with one another in society. Artists featured are: Vito Acconci, Bas Jan Ader, Yael Bartana, Sebald Beham, Erhard Schon, Niklas Stoer, John Bock, David Claerbout, Pieter Coecke van Aelst, Peter Feiler, Yang Fudong Cyprien Gaillard, Sejla Kameric, Paul Kooiker, Inez van Lamsweerde, Erin van Lieshout, Aernout Mik, Melvin Moti, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Bruce Nauman, Joachim Patinir, Anri Sala, Cindy Sherman, Marijke van Warmerdam, Andro Wekua, Guido van der Werve, Sylvie Zijmans, Melvin Moti, Zwelethu Mthethwa, Bruce Nauman, Joachim Patinir, Anri Sala, Cindy Sherman, Salla Tykka, Marijke van Warmerdam, Andro Wekua, Guido van der Werve, Sylvie Zijlmans.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In French and Turkish. 127 p., color ills. "Modernity? Perspectives from France and Turkey" explores the effects of modernity on contemporary art. Sponsored by the Comité Colbert, the show focuses on how artists have come to a reckoning with the phenomenon of modernity, a concept that is still valid today. In a globalized world, we are going through a period of diverse, profound, and complex relationships in which the use of new technology and social media are forming intricate structures. Istanbul Modern's exhibition attempts to reveal how the remnants of modernity have seeped into our lives. While the show creates an opportunity for comparing approaches of artists to modernity and assessing similar and different points, its aesthetic approach enables us to establish new proposals for social readings and utopias. Of course, it is also true that France was one of the crucial role models in Turkey's modernization project. Curated by Celenk Bafra and Levent Calikoglu, the show features 17 works from 11 different French and Turkish artists, including Nevin Aladag, Fikret Atay, Kader Attia, Ayse Erkmen, Cyprien Gaillard, Thomas Hirschhorn, Pierre Huyghe, Chris Marker, Sarkis, Hale Tenger and Nasan Tur. The dynamics of modern life have been both criticized and considered an endless opportunity for inquiry in the visual arts.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. BAFRA, CELENK (Curator) Mektep Meydan Galatasaray. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by Celenk Bafra, Ulya Soley, Begum Akkoyunlu Ersoz, Yasemin Ulgen. Istanbul: Suna ve Inan Kirac Vakfi - Pera Muzesi, 2018. 4to.,134, [1] p., color ills. In Turkish and English. Paperback. New ISBN: 9786054642809 CATALOG: Social history KEYWORDS: Galatasaray High School Education Istanbul - Constantinople On the occasion of its 150th anniversary, School Square Galatasaray offers a fresh perspective through contemporary art, to this deep-rooted school, which has hosted cultural and artistic events along with being an educational institution encouraging and supporting its students' artistic tendencies and creativity throughout its history. The exhibition takes on the name of "school" (mektep) in reference to the name of the institution still remembered as and called "the school" by its graduates even today, to the history of the building and its character as a place of education. This word play thus both references the Galatasaray Square with which the school is inextricably and necessarily intermeshed and envisages the structure of the Galatasaray High School with its garden and surrounding walls as an intellectual square where contemporary artists shall meet and debate. The site and context-specific works in the exhibition by the artists Elvan Alpay, biriken (Melis Tezkan, Okan Urun), Hera Buyuktasciyan, Antonio Cosentino, Burak Delier, Hasan Deniz, Cemal Emden, Baris Gokturk, Ali Kazma and Vahit Tuna relate to the location, function, history and space of Galatasaray High School by means of painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video, sound and performance. Although the graduate artists of Galatasaray High School and the reflection of their personal experiences on their artistic practices have been considered valuable, room has been made for perspectives to be brought in by artists looking upon the school, an organic part of the city for 150 years, from the square - namely, from the outside, to those peeking in while passing by, and to those who perhaps live in its vicinity and have it in their thoughts. Rather than providing an art-historical selection of sorts, the School Square Galatasaray exhibition aims to gaze into the past from the vantage point of the present and pass on new works to the future. The exhibition catalogue presents three articles, which provides different perspectives on culture of Galatasaray. The curator of the exhibition Celenk Bafra's essay on the relationship between the school and the square contextualizes the works in the exhibition. Besim F. Dellaloglu presents his thoughts about what it means to experience Galatasaray High School. Murat Alat uses his personal experience to contemplate on the idea of school and education in a more general sense.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1st Edition. Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 315, [5] p., color and b/w ills. Artists in their time.= Sanatçi ve zamani. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. Prep. by Levent Çalikoglu. Istanbul Modern's collection exhibition, "Artists in Their Time", focuses on how artists position their work and themselves within the concept of time. It suggests a conceptual field for examining, and reconciling, the links between an artist's time and societal, cultural, natural and universal time. It unites artists from very different periods, geographies and disciplines around common themes. "Artists in Their Time" takes as its starting point the words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar (1901-1962), one of Turkey's foremost intellectual and literary figures: "I am neither within time nor completely outside of it." Tanpinar's views about time illuminate the process by which artists come to terms with the relationship of their work with the past, the present and the future. Accordingly, this exhibition groups together works of art from distinct geographies, periods and disciplines that share the same emotions with respect to a variety of themes: the intersecting responses of abstract art from different periods; the role of materials and studios in the production of art; the transformation from landscapes and still lifes to the present conception of nature; the search for identity; attraction to the Higher and the spiritual; existential questioning; body politics; feminist approaches; the complex problems imposed by the new urban culture; the struggle against war, death and destruction; life stories from Istanbul, a metropolis defined by water and embracing the sea; and efforts to understand the people of Anatolia.

Istanbul Modern's new exhibition focuses on 'harbor' as a theme of multiple dimensions as the museum occupies a former dry cargo warehouse transformed into a modern museum building right in the area known as the Port of Istanbul. Exploring how port areas are reflected in the visual arts, not only as geographical locations but also as sites of social and economic interaction, the exhibition also delves into the symbolic and metaphorical aspects of the concept of 'harbor'. Emphasizing the relationship of the city of Istanbul with the sea and ports, "HARBOR" takes a close look at the cultural and social life that has developed on the seaside and around ports in the art of Turkey from the nineteenth century to the present. Built on curatorial research in the fields of maritime culture in Turkey, social history, and the visual arts, the exhibition also includes a timeline. Summarizing the history of Istanbul through harbors, from archaeological work on the Harbor of Theodosius (Yenikapi) to the present, the timeline highlights major transformations and turning points in the city's relationship with the sea and ports. The "HARBOR" exhibition catalogue features texts, quotes, photographs, and visuals about the artists and works in the exhibition, as well as essays in which the curators present the conceptual framework of the exhibition. Published bilingually in Turkish and English, the catalogue includes the timeline as well as an article about the ports of Istanbul by Prof. Murat Güvenç, director of the Istanbul Studies Center at Kadir Has University, who advised the exhibition team in preparing the timeline. Built at the Haliç Dockyards in Istanbul, the vessel Bastarda was designed as part of the project "Darzana?: Two Arsenals, One Vessel" for the Pavilion of Turkey at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia. It was reconstructed within the scope of the exhibition and is on view in the museum courtyard.

Condizione: New. Pera Museum presents a contemporary exhibition exploring the multi-layered architectural, art-historical and sociological significance of the Galatasaray High School on the occasion of its 150th anniversary. The exhibition curated by Celenk Bafra takes on the name of "school" ("mektep") in reference to the name of the institution still remembered as and called "the school" by its graduates even today, to the deep-rooted history of the building and its character as a place of education. What does contemporary art have to say beyond the research, publications, exhibitions and events that have already been carried out about this school? Can this school and structure that concerns not only members of the Galatasaray community, but the entire city and even country become a source of inspiration for the artists of our day? The word play in the title School Square both references the Galatasaray Square with which the school is inextricably and necessarily intermeshed and envisages the structure of the Galatasaray High School with its garden and surrounding walls as an intellectual square (an agora, forum) where contemporary artists shall meet and debate. The exhibition attempts to "square"ly expose the school's interior as seen through the eyes of artists, thus opening it up to the public by way of artistic discussion.
