Hollwel a été en la matière une des sources de Voltaire. Chirurgien de la Cie Britannique des Indes Orientales (EIC), il est amené par ses séjours successifs et ses responsabilités à Calcutta (1741-1761) à collectionner des manuscrits indiens et arabes et à s'intéresser à l'histoire du Bengale et à la religion des "Gentoux" (les Hindous). Il est connu pour son récit du "black hole of Calcutta", prison où périrent bon nombre de britanniques lors de la chute de Fort William et la prise de Calcutta par le Nabab Siraj Ud Daulah.
