Im Jardin du Roi ging er seinen botanischen Studien nach, welche bald die Aufmerksamkeit von Gerard van Spaendonck und Charles Louis L'Héritier de Brutelle weckten. Zu seinen Förderern zählten u.a. Königin Marie Antoinette und Kaiserin Joséphine. Redouté wurde wegen seiner außergewöhnlichen Begabung für botanische Darstellungen als der "Rafael der Blumen" apostrophiert.
