6pp., 12mo. In good condition, on lightly aged paper. Brodie's hand is not easy to decipher, but the letter is fulsome in its praise of Brougham and his latest work. Brodie begins by acknowledging the receipt of 'the last volume of Lord Brougham's Works published by you', a copy of which he had 'previously got as a subscriber'. He continues: 'In my poor apprehension it is even, if possible, superior to its predecessor, & more than justifies the character I formerly ventured to sketch of that illustrious individual', He continues in his praise, with reference to 'Dean Swift', 'Captn. Macheath and his associates' and 'Peachum'. In his view, never did a Lord Chancellor 'enjoy such popularity. But times are altered. The power of conferring favours is in other hands & all who expect patronage here, trouble at his resuming the vantage ground so greatly his due'. He continues with a discussion of the position of the press in the matter of Brougham's reputation. He concludes: 'Why do I trouble you with all this: - It is simply as an introduction to a statement that, did I know how to get it published, I should be proud & happy to down a notice or review of this volume.' Beneath this, in another hand, Recd 69 Pictures | [signed] John Biddle'. Above Biddle's receipt, in a third hand, are the word 'Received' and 'Recd 69 [i.e. Christie & Manson?]' in pencil. Westmacott was something of a connoisseur; his entry in the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, by Manfred Draudt, describes how by 1831, through his editorship of the 'scandalous tory journal, the Age', he 'was prosperous and possessed a pretty cottage between Barnes and Richmond, its grounds adorned with sculptures'. "Serres was trained in Paris and received his medical degree in 1810. From 1808 to 1822 he worked at the Hôtel-Dieu. In 1820 he was awarded the prize for physiological research by the Académie des Sciences and the following year gained a special prize for his two-volume work on the comparative anatomy of the brains of vertebrate animals. In 1822, he was appointed chief medical officer at the Hôpital de la Pitié. He was elected to the Académie de médecine in 1822 and to the Académie des Sciences in 1828. In 1839, he preceded Flourens as professor of comparative anatomy at the Jardin des Plantes and two years later became president of the Académie des sciences. Serres studied the comparative anatomy of a number of vertebrate organs. He noted that many organs start from a number of isolated centers, which eventually unite to form a single adult organ. In his general approach to the nature of life and the harmony between the organs he was clearly influenced by Cuvier, who mentioned Serres's work with admiration. Serres's theoretical position was more closely akin to that of Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire. Serres believed that there was only one underlying animal type and that in the course of their development, the organs of the higher animals repeated the form of the quivalent organs in lower organisms" (DSB XII pp. 315/316). …
