Robert Smith Surtees (1805 - 1864) was an English novelist, sporting writer, and founder of the New Sporting Magazine. Best known for his humorous and satirical depictions of English hunting life, Surtees created the character of Mr. Jorrocks, a Cockney grocer with an eccentric passion for fox hunting, who would become one of the most beloved comic figures in 19th-century English fiction. George Denholm Armour (1864 - 1949) was a prominent British illustrator and painter known for his equestrian and sporting art. A regular contributor to Punch, Armour captured rural and hunting life with both technical precision and humor, making him a fitting visual interpreter of Surtees' work.
