Shantz, a German Mennonite, residing in Berlin, Ontario. Mr. Shantz came to Ottawa last November, at the request of the Department of Agriculture, in company with Mr. Bernard Warkentin, a German Mennonite of Berdiansk, Russia, and to act as interpreter. Mr. Warkentin's object in coming to Canada was to find a suitable place for the settlement of Mennonites who propose to emigrate en masse from Russia. And at the request of the Department of Agriculture, he visited Manitoba, in company with Mr. Shantz. Mr. Shantz states that in writing this account of his trip, he was moved only by the desire to state the facts with the greatest possible accuracy. Department of Agriculture, Ottawa, April, 1873." Jacob Yost Shantz (18221909), a prominent Mennonite businessman and philanthropist from Berlin, Ontario (now Kitchener), played a pivotal role in facilitating the migration of thousands of Mennonites from Russia to the Canadian Prairies. At the request of the Canadian Department of Agriculture, Shantz accompanied Bernard Warkentin to Manitoba in 1872-73 to assess conditions for settlement. His reports - including the present French edition - helped pave the way for the establishment of substantial Mennonite colonies in Manitoba, profoundly shaping the cultural and agricultural landscape of Western Canada.
