Review copy with review literature laid in. On the Water is an intensely told tale of adolescent passion, narrated by Anton, a shy, uncomfortable outsider who harbours a yearning for a different kind of life that becomes symbolized in the river and in rowing. He joins the club, crossing the metaphorical and actual line which divides the town he lives in and forms an unlikely partnership with the calm, ironical David. Together they become a successful coxless pair, coached by an enigmatic German, Schneiderhahn. The story revels in descriptions of the physical exertion and emotional connection as it recreates pre-war Amsterdam. Telling the story in flashbacks, Anton now stands alone on a wintry evening facing a derelict and abandoned boathouse, recalling the long, hot summer of 1939 and mourning a lost world. Octavo (8 1.2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's quarter blue cloth with silver lettering to spine an blind stamped letters to cover ion original pictorial jacket. First edition. With a rush of adrenaline, this coming-of-age novel plunges into the world of a North Florida police force. The spotlight is on Abigail ("Fitz") Fitzpatrick, a female cop who is lesbian and rarely allowed to forget it, by either her male colleagues or the public in general. As the novel begins, Fitz, reared by nuns but a self-proclaimed "street addict," has burned out after eight years as a paramedic. Following the tragic death of a boy she couldn't save, she joins the police academy and enters the macho arena of police life. The story carries us through "Rookie Daze," the grueling stage of training, and comes full circle in "Rhythm and Blues," when Fitz is a seasoned officer and trainer of rookies herself. Along the way she faces crucial decisions as love, ethics, and friendship collide. A recent breakup with a female lover, a police investigator, alters her perceptions, shaping the person she is to become. And Morelli, an appealing male colleague with a bucketful of problems, forces Fitz to test the limits of loyalty.Fast-paced, original, funny, this novel recalls the early Joseph Wambaugh in its crackling authenticity. Stress, danger, professional integrity, and harassment are the issues as Fitz, in a voice that's unforgettable, tells us what it's like to be a police officer--as an insider, and an outsider as well. First American edition. Using games by Kramnik, Shirov, Nunn and Kasparov, and complete illustrative games to highlight the key ideas, this book offers an examination of one of the most dramatic forms of defence in chess. In the Sveshnikov Sicilian, Black aims for maximum piece activity at the cost of a shattered pawn structure, seeking to seize the initiative regardless of cost. If Black is successful, the pawns will look after themselves. On the other hand, White is aiming to use Black's weaknesses as springboards for an attack of his own. Da: Cat's Curiosities, Pahrump, NV, U.S.A.
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Not a book but a 12-inch, 33-1/3 rpm "Simulated Stereo" record album, Decca DL 75125, very-good-plus vinyl in a very good cardboard jacket, which includes 12 cuts, 6 per side (which is odd, since the original radio episodes were 30 minutes -- presumably 22 or so minus the ads. But even shorn of cereal ads, "How He Became The Lone Ranger, Part 1 and Part 2," here runs seven minutes, meaning it's been edited down by two-thirds. Next come "He finds Silver, Part 1 and Part 2," then "He Finds Dan Reid, Part 1 and Part 2," all on one side. Meantime, why Decca opted to devote the jacket's entire front panel to the old joke that sees the Ranger and his faithful Indian companion coming under Indian attack, at which point Tonto delivers the time-worn punchline "What you mean WE, paleface?" we can't imagine. Though, combined with the chain-saw editing of the original episodes, we must conclude the Decca gang simply evinced no respect for the (admittedly somewhat derivative) mythmaking of WXYZ station owner George Trendle and scriptwriter Fran Striker -- and wasn't about to waste time soliciting cast photos. Disc now reduced from $14.

Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's quarter black spine in silver lettering to spine over blue boards in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Julia Winchell's not coming back. Her husband and two little daughters are waiting for her at their diner in Tennessee, but the small-business convention Julia attended in Cincinnati turned out to be her last stop. Or practically her last, since she took the time for an assignation with the lover who's still, like her family, awaiting word from her. Instead of any word, they get only a leg recovered from the Interstate, along with a trash bag containing her hands and feet and head that surfaces in a trout stream. But Cincinnati cop Sonora Blair doesn't think there's any mystery about who killed Julia. Just before her death she made it clear that she'd seen a photo of a man she'd watched helplessly as he committed a murder ten years ago--a man she recognized as the Cincinnati District Attorney. With her only witness against the murderous D.A. as dead as his first victim, Sonora and her partner, Sam Delarosa, have to scramble for evidence, even though somebody in their own department is obviously feeding news about the investigation directly to the D.A.'s office, and even though every lead they turn up confirms the scary idea that a few people have known for years what this guy's been up to without lifting a finger to stop him. The story doesn't have the fiery originality of Flashpoint (1995)--Hightower makes every move as foreseeable as a train wreck from a mountaintop vista--but it hurtles along with as much velocity as one of those doomed trains. Condition: Heal corner bumped else a near fine copy in a fine jacket.
