Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. This edited book includes over one hundred and eighty short papers that were presented during the third edition of EMCEI, which was held in Sousse, Tunisia, in June 2021. Nowadays, experts as well as most of the general public know that the Mediterranean and surrounding regions are facing environmental degradation that is accelerating at an unprecedented rate. The main causes are the natural and human induced climate change, increasing pollution, urban growth, and the overexploitation and unsustainable use of resources due to rapid population growth. The effects are seen in several indicators such as the warming, more frequent extreme events, severe droughts, water shortages, contraction of natural resources, changes in land use and landscape deterioration, decreasing agricultural yields, biodiversity loss, deterioration of the ecosystems, corrosion of the natural coastal environment, sea-level rise, and ocean acidification. In addition to these more recent issues, the Mediterranean and surrounding region naturally experience a number of hazards such as floods, droughts, desertification, fires, catastrophic forest diebacks, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions. By presenting a wide range of environmental topics and new findings relevant to a variety of problems in these regions, this book appeals to anyone working in the subject area and especially students interested in learning more about new developments in environmental research initiatives in light of the worsening environmental degradation of the Mediterranean and surrounding areas, making environmental and resource protection an increasingly important issue that impedes sustainable development and social well-being. The book addresses emerging environmental issues along with new challenges by focusing on innovative approaches that contribute to achieving a sustainable environment in and around the Mediterranean Sea and by highlighting to decision makers from relevant sectors the environmental considerations that should be integrated into their own activities. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The objective of this study was to examine how semi-variograms can be used to model the spatial variability of water quality in Lake Manzala, Egypt. The lake has potential economic value not only to the local community but also to the national economy. The lake wetland habitats are rich in wildlife species. More recently, the lake has been subjected to abrupt changes in its water quality giving the most alarming example amongst the northern Egyptian lakes as a result of economic development, urbanization and population growth, urban agglomeration and land reclamation schemes. Spherical models were found to be a more successful estimator of water quality condition and were of support to traditional methods as an adequate tool to provide valuable spatial and temporal detailed information about water quality in the Lake. Ordinary Kriging provided good estimations of water quality parameters points in the lake where field sampling was limited and which can be of importance in future sampling schemes. The modeled distribution of water quality was presented in the form of digital maps based on both traditional sample data and variogram models. 120 pp. Englisch.

Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - Fluxes in eutrophication status in Lake Manzala, the largest freshwater lake in Egypt, were investigated based on comparison of multiparameter data. Eutrophication maps were undertaken for each parameter using Carlson trophic indices. In addition, Kriging method of interpolation was effectively performed to identify the spatial patterns of all measured parameters. Spherical model was applied to fit all experimental variograms. It was shown that all eutrophication variables were significantly located along SE NW and E W directions. The investigation indicates that the lake has dramatically experienced accelerated eutrophication (71.14 % and 27.73% of the lake were eutrophic and hypertrophic respectivel). In conjunction with excessive eutrophication in the lake, an overall move towards urbanization and increasing the cultivated land was detected in the catchment. An integrated approach should be adopted to attain the lake restoration and enhance truly sustainable development of water. This approach should chiefly be based on a comprehensive range of policies such as building capacity and increasing environmental awareness in the local community.
