Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Dark red heavy cloth on boards with bright gilt lettering and drawing of a mountaineer on front, lettering to spine. Small book is mostly tight but 2-3 individual pages are loose including a plate. Book is square - some scuffing and shelfwear to edges and corners and spine has some cloth loss to it. Gift inscription to FFEP with date of 1911. Frontispiece in color with tissue guard and lovely b/w illustrations by author all intact and Very good to near fine; map by author in black and red in Very Good+ also. More than just a reading copy but does have it's faults - still a nice little book with fantastic history and drawings and an important piece of climbing history. Stated as Second Edition on flyleaf page, 1896.

Original clothbound, slight fading to spine, light soiling, gilt image on front-cover (mountaineer). In all a fine copy. The first edition was published in 1894, some corrections were made especially for the different spelling of mountain peaks. In the first edition the ?Marmolata? came up with at least 4 different spellings and for the ?Eisach, Eisack or Eisak? these 3 diff. spellings were given. ?Rather exaggerated accounts of fairly unremarkable climbs. The reviewer in the Alpine Journal noted with some satisfaction that the book had been advertised by one magazine under the heading of ?FICTION? (?). (Neate). Overall shelf wear and soiling, faded and slightly slanted spine, remains Good. The contents include numerous illustrations, some full page and in color. The text shows very slight smudging, a few pencil marks and one slight hinge separation (not affecting binding integrity). This copy is from a 19th Century private lending institution, the Mercantile Library of New York City. The Mercantile Library stamp and number are on the title page and some of the internal pages and their two bookplates on the front pastedown. The spine has a small, oval Mercantile library sticker. There are no other indications of the library's ownership.
