2002 N & M Press reprint (original 1925). SB. xv + 189pp portrait, plates, maps, plansPublished Price £18.50 The author of this book is the well-known historian whose works include The First World War and The History of the 36th (Ulster) Division. The regiment was unusual in that it had three Reserve battalions, 3rd, 4th and 5th, none of which left the British Isles and take up a brief chapter in this history. The 6th Battalion was formed in Dublin in August 1914 and allotted to 29th Brigade of the 10th Irish Division with which it served on Gallipol, in Macedonia, in Egypt and in Palestine where it was disbanded in May 1918. 7th Bn was formed in Belfast in September 1914 and went to the Western Front in February 1916 as part of 48th Brigade, 16th Irish Division with which it remained till August 1917; in November 1917 it was disbanded and the personnel absorbed by the 2nd Battalion. The 1st and 2nd Battalions served on the Western Front. The 1st Battalion was in Aden when war broke out and arrived back in the UK in October where it was put in 25th Brigade of the newly formed 8th Division which arrived in France in November 1914. It remained with the brigade till February 1918 when it was transferred to the 36th Ulster Division. The 2nd Battalion was in Tidworth with 7th Brigade, 3rd Division. It went to France as part of the original BEF in August 1914 but in October 1915 its brigade was transferred to 25th Division in exchange for a brigade from that division. In February 1918 another posting moved the battalion to the 36th Ulster Division with which it remained for the rest of the war, in the same brigade as the 1st Battalion. As may be expected with such a distinguished author these battalion histories are authoritative and well written with outstanding maps. The record is set out chronologically in a series of Books one to each year of the war with chapters covering specific actions during that year. Appendices list Honours and Awards issued to Officers, WOs, NCOs and men. These are arranged in alphabetical order showing which battalion the recipient was with, the specific award (including Mentioned in Despatches) and the London Gazette date. Among the awards listed is the VC to a Corporal Quigg, who is shown as being in the 2nd Battalion; he was not, he was in the 12th Battalion and should not feature in this book . Another appendix lists the Roll of Honour of officers (188 of them) with battalion and date of death, other ranks deaths are given as a total - 3,118. These figures are for the first seven battalions only.

2023 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1920). SB. xxiii+ xiv + 394 pp + 29 of maps & illus.(27 in colour).Published Price £35 It was originally planned to complete the Official History of the Egypt and Palestine campaign in two volumes, with this second volume taking the story from the appointment of Allenby to the command of the Egyptian Expeditionary Force (EEF) in June 1917, to the conclusion of the armistice with Turkey. But it was only after Allenbyâ s arrival that the campaign really took off, with all the major offensives and battles taking place during his period of command. It thus became clear that Volume II would need to be in two parts. This part covers the offensive at Gaza and Beersheba and the subsequent battles in the Judaean Hills for the capture and defence of Jerusalem, which lasted from the end of October to the end of December 1917 without a break. It continues into 1918 with the operations in the Jordan Valley in February 1918; first the capture of Jericho, then the two raids into Trans-Jordan with the important engagements between them, lasting until 4 May. At this point there was a real break in the campaign for the first time and it is here that Part I ends. The contents list includes Parts I and II and all the appendices are at the end of Part II.

2023 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1930). SB. 353 pp + 22 of maps & illus.(17 in colour).Published Price £35 Part II of the Official History of The Great War in the Middle East takes the story from May 1918 to the armistice. It begins with a summary of the Arab revolt against the Turks, which involved the exploits of Col. T.E. Lawrence â of Arabiaâ , and consisted of harassing attacks and sabotage of railways which drew off great numbers of the Turks to the benefit of the EEF. This was important because Allenby was being required to despatch British infantry battalions and Yeomanry regiments to France where the great German spring offensives had been launched in March. Indian battalions were set to replace the British ones, and the ensuing reorganisation of the EEF is described in some detail. The narrative continues with the final offensives - the battles of Megiddo, the operations of the Desert Mounted Corps, Chaytorâ s Force, the pursuit through Syria and the capture of Damascus. An epilogue discusses the policy of the campaign, the strategy and the tactics. There are numerous appendices which apply to both Parts I and II, beginning with a tabular record of operations from June 1917 and containing orders of battle of the EEF in October 1917 and in September 1918 as well as that of the Turkish forces. There are examples of Force Orders, of corps operation orders and instructions, and finally there is a good index to both parts.

2011 N & M Press reprint (original pub 1933). SB. xvi + 409 pp + 5 of illus + 16 Sketch Maps in colour. This is the first of two volumes which, after a brief background review of Macedonia and its neighbours, and the conflict between Austria and Serbia which triggered The Great War, picks up the story from the landing of British and French troops at Salonika in northern Greece and takes it up to the abdication of the pro-German King Constantine of Greece and the entry of Greece into the war on the side of the Allies. The last of the military operations covered in this volume is the April/May 1917 allied offensive known as the Battle of Dojran; British divisions in the theatre consisted of 10th (Irish), 22nd, 26th, 27th (reg), 38th (reg) and 60th (2/2nd London, TF); the latter was transferred to the EEF in June 1917 and fought in the Palestine campaign.
