Printed wrappers, 8vo. viii, 41 pp, plates. A very interesting monograph which traces leaves stolen by Wise from books in the British library to the copies in the Ashley Library and elswhere to which he transferred them. Supplement to the Bibliographical Society's Publications No 19. From a contemporary review: "Three years ago The Times printed an article by Mr Foxon revealing that many of the pre-Restoration quarto plays in Wise's Ashley Library, bought by the British Museum in 1937, contain leaves which had been stolen from the British Museum. The Letters of T.J. Wise to J. H. Wrenn, edited by Miss F. E. Ratchford in 1944, showed that Wise sold a substantial number of such plays to Wrenn. Wrenn disposed of his books to the University of Texas, and the Trustees of that University have recently lent a large selection of tlesse plays to the British Museum for examination. The result of that examination is here presented in Mr Foxon's second interim report. A total of 206 leaves appear to have been stolen from the Museum's early quartos: of these eighty-nine have been identified in Wise's copies and sixty in copies which he sold to Wrenn. . 'it seems clear [concludes Mr Foxon] that he was engaged in a commercial operation which might involve repeated thefts from the same play to complete a number of imperfect copies'. The methods used to identify the stolen leaves are simple and convincing." Name (E H Milligan) on front wrapper, wrappers darkened and duststained, otherwise Good.
