Sykes was a British agricultural writer and editor associated with the early organic-farming movement. His work emphasised composting, humus formation, and biological approaches to soil management during a period dominated by the rise of synthetic fertilisers. BOOK RESUME: Humus and the Farmer belongs to the mid-century movement that reshaped agricultural thought, emerging as part of the wider organic-farming tradition influenced by Sir Albert Howards earlier work. This volume by E. B. Sykes, helped translate Howards principles of soil fertility into practical guidance for ordinary farmers at a time when industrial agriculture was accelerating. Its outlines how composting, crop rotation, and natural soil processes can restore fertility and improve yields without heavy chemical intervention. Sykes, drawing on Howards pioneering research, emphasises long-term soil health as both an economic and ecological imperative.
