Aggiungi al carrelloA collection of three prize essays, all by southern clergymen, on the duties of Christian slaveholders to those they enslave. Faced with mounting criticism from northern abolitionists, antebellum southerners felt compelled to defend their "peculiar institution." Among those who came to slavery's defense were southern ministers from across the denominational spectrum. These proslavery ministers were eager to take part in what historian Mitchell Snay describes as a "clerical effort to sanctify slavery." Citing scripture, these ministers offered a biblical defense of slavery, arguing for, among other things, the mutual obligations between masters and slaves. In 1849, the Baptist State Convention of Alabama offered a prize of $200 for the best "Essay on the Duties of Christian Masters to their Servants," to be chosen by a "committee selected from the leading religious denominations of the Southern and South-western States." The winners were announced in 1850 at the following year's convention, and the three winning essays were published together in the present volume by the Southern Baptist Publication Society in 1851. The first of these essays, entitled "Master and Servant," is by Holland Nimmons McTyeire (1824-89), a Methodist minister from New Orleans who later went on to become a bishop and co-founder of Vanderbilt University. Reassuring White southerners of slavery's legitimacy, McTyeire writes that the Bible's "sanctions" of slavery are "stronger than any within.reach." "The duties a master owes to his servant," McTyeire writes, "are as binding upon the conscience as those the servant owes to the master: neither can be neglected without sin." Like other pro-slavery ministers, McTyeire calls for better treatment of the enslaved, but not without reminding each "master" that he "has souls as well as bodies under his care" and that the "responsibility of eternal as well as temporal interests rests upon his shoulders." The second essay, "Melville Letters; or, The Duties of Masters to Their Servants," is from C. F. Sturgis, a Baptist minister in Greensborough, Alabama. As its title suggests, Sturgis's essay takes the form of an epistolary exchange between two imagined brothers, Joseph and William Melville. Throughout this hypothetical correspondence, the younger William, a professed Christian, attempts to impress upon Joseph, the older, more prudent, and less devout of the two, "the important thought that [slaves] have souls" and to convince him of his moral obligation to both the spiritual and physical well-being of the enslaved. The final essay, by A.T. Holmes, a minister in Hayneville, Georgia, is entitled "The Duties of Christian Masters," and, like the others, it seeks to impress upon its readers the "mutual obligations" enjoined by scripture on both slaveholders and the enslaved. Holmes urges masters to consider their duties to the enslaved not only in relation to "their increased value as property, but, also, to their improvements in moral worth." A significant book, illustrating the lengths to which southern ministers were willing to go in order to justify slavery in the name of religion. SABIN 43667. LIBRARY COMPANY, AFRO-AMERICANA 6278. WORK, p.292, 294, & 315. DE RENNE, p. 541. Mitchell Snay, Gospel of Disunion: Religion and Separatism in the Antebellum South (Chapel Hill, 1993), p.79. 12mo. Original publisher's brown cloth, stamped in blind, expertly rebacked with original gilt backstrip laid down. Scattered foxing and tanning.
