Each chapter opens with a description of the geographical background of the various groups, as the Indian's outlook on life was directly influenced by his immediate environment. We read of the Eskimo, living in a harsh and unpredictable wasteland, attributing spirit natures to the food animals that were so important to him. We follow the heroic myths of the war~like Sioux and Comanche as they hunted the great buffalo herds. We trace the more elaborate myths of the settled Apache and Navajo of the desert, and those of the eastern seaboard who were feeling their way toward nationhood. Irene Nicholson, in her account or the mythology of Mexico and Central America, reveals a completely different world, one hidden from the invading Spaniards.
