(originally published as three volumes ~ North American Indian Mythology, Mexican & Central American Mythology, South American Mythology). 407p. 71 full color illustrations. more than 300 b&w illustrations. index. religion. mythology. cosmology. ancient history. theology. ~ Cottie Burland surveys the mythology of the North American Indian, and shows that here can be found evidence supporting the simple archetypal myths of mankind~evidence long lost to the Old World. Each chapter opens with a description of the geographical background of the various groups, as the Indian's outlook on life was directly influenced by his immediate environment. We read of the Eskimo, living in a harsh and unpredictable wasteland, attributing spirit natures to the food animals that were so important to him. We follow the heroic myths of the war~like Sioux and Comanche as they hunted the great buffalo herds. We trace the more elaborate myths of the settled Apache and Navajo of the desert, and those of the eastern seaboard who were feeling their way toward nationhood. Irene Nicholson, in her account or the mythology of Mexico and Central America, reveals a completely different world, one hidden from the invading Spaniards. They received an impression of horror and saw only blood~soaked temples and human sacrifices, though some of them might have paused to wonder how a world of such wealth, with an art of astonishing richness, could ever have evolved in an atmosphere of terror and oppression. The work of a handful of thoughtful enquirers, followed by the increasing interest of scholars, revealed step by step the true face of a civilisation which looked back to the fifth century BC. The Spaniards arrived when it had already entered its twilight ~ the Aztecs, the people in power, had debased the culture which provided their outward glory. This culture grew from the people's belief in simple things~the maize which provided their basic food, the bright stones the invaders were to covet, the sun and the rain. These beliefs became a beautiful and complex religion, and led to highly developed art and science. Mathematics and astronomy were developed to a degree which not only produced calendars of astonishing accuracy but also foretold the very day on which the destroyer would arrive on the soil of Mexico. Harold Osborne, himself a resident among the Quechua Indians of Peru for a number of years, is uniquely qualified to relate the myths of South America, which range from the race memories of jungle Indians to the myths of the Incas who claimed to be the sons of the sun. The way the great empire in the Andes fell to a handful of Spanish soldiers is one of history's great adventures. That much of the triumph was hollow was soon apparent and the tragedy of the fall outweighed the value of the conquerors' loot. An irreplaceable store of record, legend and history was lost~ruthlessly destroyed as being the work of the devil. Posterity was left with a great mass of artistic remains and awe~inspiring ruins~and silence. The Andean civilisation had no written language and with the last of its priests and learned men went the last hope, it seemed, of learning its secrets. But the Spanish chroniclers kept for us at least a part of the lore of this once great people, and they led the way for the archaeologists. Soon a fantastic range of cultures, dating back nearly 3,000 years, began to emerge from the shad.
