The book provides a rigorous mathematical foundation for understanding the mechanical behavior of the Earth's crust and mantle through the lens of continuum mechanics. Unlike standard geophysics textbooks, this work focuses on the theoretical physics required to model large-scale geological processes, such as tectonic plate movement, earthquake preparation, and the long-term deformation of the Earth's interior. Thematic Scope and Content: The monograph is structured to move from classical elasticity to more complex, modern theories of matter: - Classical Elasticity and Fluid Dynamics: Establishing the baseline for how solid rock and semi-viscous mantle materials respond to stress and strain. - Theory of Dislocations and Defects: A significant portion of the book is dedicated to the "dislocation theory" of earthquakes. It models faults not just as simple cracks, but as mathematical dislocations in a continuous medium. - Non-Classical Continua: The text explores advanced theories such as micropolar elasticity and magneto-elasticity, which account for the granular nature of rocks and the influence of the Earth's magnetic field on mechanical properties. - Thermodynamics of the Interior: Analyzing the heat flow and energy dissipation associated with the Earth's internal "engine." The work is highly mathematical, utilizing tensor calculus and differential geometry to describe the evolution of the Earth's physical state over time. It is intended for theoretical geophysicists and seismologists who require precise models for: - Pre-seismic stress accumulation; - The propagation of seismic waves in complex media; - The slow, "creeping" flow of the mantle (mantle convection).

It begins with an updated overview of plate tectonics, reviewing the evolution of the theory from early continental drift models to the present consensus on lithospheric plate motion, spreading, collision and subduction. Through detailed paleomagnetic data and reconstructions, the authors trace the trajectories of continents across geological time, establishing a foundation for modelling crustal deformation and intraplate stresses. A major portion of the volume is dedicated to the structure and dynamics of the mantle, with emphasis on large-scale convection. Drawing on seismic tomography and gravity field analysis, the authors differentiate upper and lower mantle processes, discuss the layered nature of mantle convection and consider the implications of these flows for surface tectonics and thermal evolution. The existence of deep mantle plumes, the potential for whole-mantle versus layered convection and the mechanical coupling between lithosphere and asthenosphere are all examined with reference to observational datasets and numerical models. Another key theme is the stress field of the lithosphere. The book analyses stress using three independent approaches: theoretical modelling based on mechanical and thermal structure; inference from surface observables such as gravity and topography; and inversion of seismic moment tensors. These methodologies converge to reveal a complex picture of stress propagation from mantle convection to crustal deformation, highlighting the interconnection of deep processes with observable tectonic phenomena like rifting, subduction and orogenic compression. Thermodynamic principles are used to address irreversible processes such as mantle differentiation, core formation and secular cooling. The authors explore how non-equilibrium thermodynamics and entropy production models can be applied to long-term geological processes, particularly to explain self-organisation, internal ordering and the emergence of structured heterogeneities in the Earth's interior. Core-mantle interactions and the role of chemical stratification in the lower mantle are also addressed through both theoretical and empirical lenses. Later chapters return to the observational record, using paleomagnetic and geomagnetic data to track Earth's field reversals, secular variation and the geodynamo process. This links outer core dynamics to observable magnetic signatures, offering a valuable window into deep-Earth processes. The study also includes comparisons with other terrestrial bodies, such as the Moon and Mars, highlighting differences in thermal history, tectonic activity and interior evolution that inform our understanding of Earth's uniqueness in the solar system. Throughout, the volume maintains a focus on integrating geophysical, thermodynamic and geochemical data with advanced computational methods. Its broad scope makes it highly relevant for geoscientists working on mantle dynamics, tectonic modelling, planetary geology and Earth system science. Appendices provide detailed data on tectonic plate motion, stress tensors, gravity anomalies and heat flow, making the work a useful reference for both researchers and graduate students. The book synthesises decades of research to offer a coherent model of the Earth's long-term evolution, linking deep interior processes with surface dynamics and planetary context.

It brings also an insight into the evolution of the planets, especially of the planetary interiors, like core formation, heat transfer and formation of minerals. Approaching different problems of the evolution of the Earth and Planets, we were forced to look upon this evolution as a part of the evolution of the Solar System, or even further as a part of the physical evolution of matter. Abundances of chemical elements can be explained only when we go back to the formation of planets and earlier to the nucleosynthesis process. In studying the formation and growth of the Earth's core, it was necessary to make a comparison with other planets, which are at different relative age of development. Two trends dominate in the research on the evolution of the Earth and the Planets. One, based on cosmology, is aimed at explaining their formation and early evolution. The other uses Plate Tectonics as a framework for describing more advanced evolutionary processes of their lithospheres and interiors. In this volume we give a cosmological insight into evolution of the Planetary System and of the Earth. The consecutive chapters present a synopsis of achievements of cosmology, a review of primordial nucleosynthesis and a discussion on formation of structures in the Universe - galaxies, stars and planetary systems, further, we present theories of planet formation and their early evolution: heat transfer, chemical and mineralogical processes, core formation and, finally, the generation of their magnetic field.

Book is clean and bright with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps, firmly bound. Issued without a dust jacket. -- This edited volume provides a mathematical framework for the study of the preparation and initiation of seismic events. It addresses the transition of the Earth's crust from quasi-static stress accumulation to sudden, dynamic failure. By synthesising the principles of continuum mechanics, thermodynamics, and the theory of defects, the work offers a granular understanding of the 'preparation zone' where micro-cracking and dilatancy occur prior to rupture. It specifically develops the "dilatancy-diffusion" model to explain the physical coupling between rock deformation and fluid flow. The content explores the evolution of fracture as a complex, non-linear process. Technical chapters detail the mechanics of crack propagation and the role of fluid infiltration in altering the effective stress within the rock matrix. A significant portion of the work is dedicated to the identification and modelling of precursory phenomena, including dilatancy-diffusion models, seismic gaps, changes in seismic velocity ratios, and variations in b-value statistics. The analysis also investigates electromagnetic and geochemical signals, providing a theoretical basis for how these anomalies are generated by physical changes in the crust during the premonitory stage. The book remains a vital reference for physics-based earthquake forecasting and seismic hazard assessment. It bridges the gap between laboratory rock mechanics and large-scale crustal dynamics, offering the technical language required to model earthquake nucleation. As a product of the Institute of Geophysics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the volume represents a definitive synthesis of the "Warsaw School" of theoretical seismology, presenting the research conducted over several decades. For researchers in seismology and structural geology, this volume provides the foundational data needed to interpret data streams from modern seismic networks and satellite monitoring systems.
